Over the last couple of years I’ve had a whole world gone open to me when it comes to veganism, minimalism, zero waste etc. And I think it’s good. I mean we all want to do our best to help the world. And there are so many things we can do to make the world a little bit better.
There is lots of knowledge that you can’t ignore. So you adapt you try to change the way that you have been living and be the change you want to see in the world. But damn can it be hard sometimes. And how do you know that you are taking it on a bit too much? I would love to live zero waste but when I want to enjoy a nice evening with a good movie and chips I seem to already fail. Chips means plastic, lined with god knows what, and sure you can replace it with home-made chips etc. But then there seems to be a whole lot of shit involved that also contributes to waste. And that thai sweet chilli chips which you love, so much, has milk-powder in it. Because leaving that 3%* of milk powder out would ruin the taste. Seriously there are so many items that contain milk or egg powder that can so easily be left out. But why care for animals?
The industry is clearly not yet adapted to allow easy zero-waste (and vegan) living. So as much as I can try and do my best, I will. But for f*ck sake, sometimes I just want chips. And sometimes I will eat out and need a napkin (un-prepared zero waster I know) and that should all be okay too. Because if I start worrying about all that, adding up to wanting to eat fully vegan and all my life issues which I tend to over-dramatize, I wont live happy. And my happiness is important as well.
Eating vegan is a lot easier for me than living zero-waste but there are some issues I have. I know the life of an animal is more important then my sensory pleasure. Hell, I don’t even need animal products for good taste, that’s what seasoning is for. And the ‘vegan revolution’ really does help. I mean it’s 2018, we have vegan bacon, cheese, egg, etc. But some things really need a bit more change. And I’m just trying to figure out if I am the only person who struggles with these kind of things?
Am I doing something wrong? Or does everyone have these struggles but just keeps it for themselves?
Since 2018 I had a small list with my goals for 2018. I initially wanted to start another Day Zero Preoject (DZP), as I really enjoyed the last time I did that. However I only had a small list. Lately I’ve had some inspiration and I really wanted to write new goals down. Since it are still relatively small and easy goals, I will add it to my list of goals for 2018. Which you can find here. So what are my new goals?
There is a huge amount of food spillage. The waste is immense and in order to be a part of the solution, Amsterdam offers an amazing option. It is a really awesome idea, however not many people know about it. I recently learned about it, and I wish I knew about it sooner. There is an organization called BuurtBuik. What they do is they collect food that is still good but would otherwise be thrown away. And with that food they make a delicious menu, which they serve for free. Buurtbuik works with volunteers and is a non-profit project. When I first heard about it from my mom, I thought it was only for the people in the direct neighborhood or for people who have less to spend. However that’s not the case. I have only been there once in the location in Amsterdam zuid. On their website buurtbuik they have more information about the locations and the time and dates at which each location offers food. It is all in Dutch but I think it’s quite clear and with google translate I expect it is easy to understand for English speakers. It is however not a tourist spot, it is meant for people that live in the area. The reason I still want to write it in English, is because I really love the idea and I think it would be great if more cities could join this or could start their own version!
Last time I wrote about zero waste, I shared some good zero waste habits I already had. This time I wanted to tell you my plans for the near future. It are easy swaps, but because I still have the not zero waste friendly back-ups it is important to first use those until they can be replaced by better alternatives.
Hi everyone. Today I want to talk about going zero waste and I want to take you along with my journey. I love watching zero waste videos on YouTube, especially as it really motivates myself and inspires me to produce less waste. There are multiple things that I already do to reduce the amount of waste that I produce, and there are some things that I am ready to introduce to my lifestyle. I am a total beginner when I comes to zero waste, so if you have any remarks or tips, please let me know!
